Q-TV Will Not Participate In Spectrum Auction

Posted by Delta Broadcasting on

The Delta College Board of Trustees held a special meeting Tuesday, Jan. 12 in which it voted to not participate in the FCC Spectrum Auction.

There is tremendous support for Q-TV within the Board, the College and in the community. Public opinion to stay on the air has been overwhelming. We held two public forums, and we also took comments by mail and email. We heard from very young children to people in their 90s about how important the station is in their lives.

One comment that stands out to me was from a grandmother who wrote, "We ask that you consider keeping our PBS station on the air for, without you, we will lose a very good friend." We received hundreds of such pleas to keep the station on the air, and I’m very pleased to tell our community, that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

At a meeting on Dec. 8, the Board voted to direct a three-member group - Board Chair Mike Rowley, Pam Clark, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement, and me - to handle all spectrum-related activities, including investigating the options of participating in the auction, moving to a VHF channel, or developing a channel sharing agreement with another station in the market.

Mr. Rowley said the Trustees needed to look into all opportunities with the station. “We had a fiduciary responsibility to keep all the options open," he said, "but once we received some additional information back that indicated those options weren’t going to allow us to continue to serve the community in the quality way that we’ve done since 1964, it became evident that there really was only one option – to keep our ‘gem’ by not participating in the auction.”

We heard you! Thank you for your continued support of our operation.
