The B-52 and Oscoda: The Making of Wurtsmith AFB
In this local documentary, Delta College Public Media takes a look at life on Wurtsmith Air Force Base, the small town of Oscoda, and how the two are intertwined.
The B-52 and Oscoda tells the story of how an airstrip in the small town of Oscoda, Michigan, became one of three Strategic Air Command bases in the state with the B-52 bomber. If you spent any time near Oscoda during the Cold War, you'd be familiar with the sights and sounds of military aircraft taking to the skies.
You'll hear what life was like for a B-52 crew and learn about the role this plane played in the Cold War and the Vietnam War. You will also see what happened to the planes, the base, and the town as the Cold War came to an end and the U.S. and the former Soviet Union began to disarm.
